About Marstrand

Marstrand was founded by King Haakon IV in the 1200s and became, together with the rest of Bohuslän a part of Sweden in connection with the Peace of Roskilde in 1658. Shipping, trade and fishing has been the city's primary industries, but their luck has varied in pace with the availability of herring, which has ruled the city's prosperity. It has also been affected by war several times during both the Danish-Norwegian and Swedish time.

Marstrand is a locality in Kungälvs municipality situated on two islands, the island of Marstrand and Koön. Marstrand is furthest out to sea, and home to the city center.

It is an idyllic town that in the summer is a major tourist destination and the Swedish sailing metropolis. Marstrand is a yearly basis for Marstrand Regatta, Stena Match Cup Sweden and other major sailing championships. The city became one of the earliest and most popular seaside resorts, which were particularly high status thanks to King Oscar II's annual visit.

Explore the island, visit the fort and give the lighthouse a hug! Just 40 minutes from Gothenburg, you'll find the adventure!
